Membership

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said it best: "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." IPI shares Dr. King’s sentiments. Restrictions on a free press anywhere in the world are a threat to press freedom everywhere. By joining IPI, you join in solidarity with these ideals.

Everyone joins IPI for the sake of an idea … First, the strong must defend the weaker; second, the skilled must help the less-skilled; third, all can contribute to improving the practice of the profession.

Being the truly global network of media professionals, IPI has the capacity to counter threats to press freedom internationally. IPI has undertaken an extensive spectrum of activities and is constantly striving to maintain and expand its reputation as the world's leading press freedom organisation.

Cooperation agreement with the Media Legal Defence Initiative

The Opens external link in new windowMedia Legal Defence Initiative is an NGO whose mission is to help journalists and independent media defend legal cases against them. Based in London, it works through a global network of individual lawyers and partner organisations to provide on-the-ground legal assistance.

When a journalist is sued – often for libel or other charges related to their writing – MLDI can help find lawyers, pay legal fees, and if necessary work closely with lawyers defending the case to provide additional legal backup. Where necessary, we will put teams of lawyers on a case. Journalists or media outlets in need of legal support can contact us directly for an emergency grant or other form of assistance.

MLDI has a high rate of success. When necessary, it will defend a case through several appeals, including to national supreme courts or international human rights courts, and through this it has been able to win or get claims against journalists withdrawn in more than 75% of cases. Recent wins include the Opens external link in new windowdismissal of million dollar libel threats against US-based Nigerian corruption website Sahara Reporters; Opens external link in new windowacquittals for Ugandan journalists prosecuted on trumped-up treason charges; the Opens external link in new windowdefeat of publishing bans in Malaysia; and rulings at the Opens external link in new windowUN and Opens external link in new windowdomestic courts invalidating Opens external link in new windowcriminal libel. Several of these wins have long-term impact and changed the law to allow greater freedom of expression.

20% discount on training at Poynter

Poynter is a school that exists to ensure that communities have access to excellent journalism—the kind of journalism that enables us to participate fully and effectively in our democracy. To that end, they teach those who manage, edit, produce, program, report, write, blog, photograph and design, whether they belong to news organizations or work as independent entrepreneurs. They teach those who teach, as well as students in middle school, high school and college—the journalists of tomorrow. And they teach members of the public, helping them to better understand how journalism is produced and how to tell for themselves whether it’s credible.

Poynter teaches management, ethical decision-making and the power of diversity; they teach editing, writing, reporting and new media skills; they teach those in broadcast, print and the Web; they teach those trying to remake their organizations and those trying to remake their journalistic skills set. Poynter teaching is unique. Guided by a resident faculty that includes distinguished professionals and scholars, their programs are designed to be highly interactive and give participants lots of individual attention. Teaching is both grounded in the extremely difficult realities of the marketplace and focused on the highest standards of journalistic values. Practical and aspirational, it is often referred to as the “Poynter Experience.”

Poynter is offeringOpens external link in new window 20% discounts for IPI members for Online Group Seminars on News University, their e-learning site. Check courses Opens external link in new windowhere and Opens window for sending emailcontact IPI to receive the discount code.
